June 23, 2006, Newsletter Issue #13: Adding a photo with a transparent background to a Flash banner ad

Tip of the Week

Photos with transparent backgrounds are often used in banner ads, but from the looks of many ads, not everyone knows the best way to import an image with transparency. Importing as a GIF can create a halo effect around the image. In Photoshop, create your transparent image and save for web as a PNG-24 file with transparency. The file size will be very large, but don’t worry about that, Flash will fix the problem. Import the image into Flash. When you export your movie, Flash will treat the PNG-24 file as a JPEG and compress it to the level you set at export.
