January 19, 2007, Newsletter Issue #40: Streaming video in Flash using a sub-swf

Tip of the Week

Streaming video in Flash has become very popular ever since Flash built the video compression tools into the Flash program. One common problem that arises when adding video into a Flash banner ad is that the file size limitations of the banner ad are surpassed. One way around this is create your video in a separate Flash file and then call that video into your Flash banner ad. Create your banner ad using Macromedia Flash, leaving a space for the video. Create a separate Flash movie with just your video in it. Within your Flash banner, use the loadMovie function to load in the separate video movie you created. Both the banner ad and the video movie will need to be loaded up to the ad server to work. When your Flash banner loads, it will load quickly because the video movie is not bogging it down. The video will then start playing using Flash's streaming capabilities.
